Nomads fed to lions

On a hot and sunny July day Nomads fell on their own collective swords to lose the first of the tour matches.

Hughes began with a mixture of pace and guile, Brannigan and Hoddy opening up. Christian Malford were soon in trouble as Brannigan extracted considerable variation and at 12 for 3 Malford recognised the need for consolidation. Dixon (or is it Dickson?) played an anchor role as first Barrow and then Alcorn bashed away at the other end. Nomads were particularly unlucky not to get Alcorn well before his demise as he lofted a number of drives into vacant spaces in the outfield; however some novel field placings failed to pay off. At 178 before the sixth wicket fell, Nomads were looking down the proverbial barrel of a gun, but Brannigan’s return, despite being a little expensive brought, a change in fortunes. Bowling an interesting mixture of gentle balls and slightly pacier stuff (presumably saving his energies for the evening ahead) he managed to hit t’stumps twice and with two run outs (KS will probably tell me that should be ‘runs out’, but it just doesn’t read well!) Malford were confined to just over 200.

An excellent tea in the sunshine with plenty for spectators too, Nomads rolled back the years with Heslington and Gardner opening. A mixture of disaster and farce was to follow. Smith was bowling outside off stump and posing no real threat, although the ball was lifting off the drying pitch. Heslington played what he believed to be an excellent drive to the cover boundary. He was still ‘in the pose’ with Gardner advancing on him from the other end, when a fielder, cleverly disguised as a member of the similarly-dressed onlookers emerged to hurl the ball back in to the bowlers end. By now Gardner had realised that Heslington was still waiting for the artist to complete his sculpture and made a valiant effort to regain his ground, though failed by a couple of yards. The whistle of Gardner’s bat past his ear woke umpire Forster from his dreams at the bowler’s end and when it flew past his head a second time, the finger was inevitably raised (‘bat abuse’ should have been the verdict). Heslington was so shocked by the turn of events that he went into his shell, until a couple of overs later, he allowed the ball to dribble off his bat and roll onto his stumps. So gentle was the impact that the bails almost defied gravity as they hovered in mid air for a full ten seconds before Newton’s laws took over. In the meantime, the previously wayward Smith was pinning the left-handed Craddock back on his stumps, repeatedly, until, in an attempt to break the shackles he advanced a little too much and was stumped. At 17 for 3 things were looking sticky. Though Pickering and Brannigan hung around for a while, with the latter inevitably trying to remove the cover from the ball frequently, but also playing some good defence the run rate was rising. An attempt at a suicidal single turned out to be just that for Brannigan as he slipped in mid-wicket trying to turn around and after half getting up and diving for the crease was unlucky to find the fickle finger of the opposition umpire pointing to the heavens. Nomads struggled along after that, wickets fell regularly, Hughes tried defence, Stanley and Pickering struck crashing (?) boundaries, but the end came soon.
