 Blackburn Struck by Strykers

Nomads were struggling to raise a side and were helped out by 2 guest players both who made a contribution to the match. The threat of heavy showers and the opposition lacking players, who turned up later, encouraged Nomads to a quick start with  Gardner and Stanley, who was outscoring Gardner, scoring quickly. At the fall of the 1st wicket 45 had come off 7 overs A heavy shower then kept the players off for a short period. A good pace was maintained by Rolfe and then George and Page. A mixture of frequent bowling changes and unfamiliar names kept the scorer on his toes and he apparently missed a bowling change which was sorted out by the opposition. Rolfe was bowled when he looked good for a century, although earlier he was almost caught and bowled but gained 4 runs in overthrows when the bowler tried to run him out at the keeper’s end.  Cartwright and Blackburn kept things going with  a final contribution of 62 off the last 9 overs, The opposition like to get all the team involved with 10 players getting a bowl – one over resulting in 15 wides (3 boundaries off wides). This spirit may have cost them the match but it is a good attitude. A score of 236-7 looked to give us good chances although we know Stafford Strykers are usually a good batting side.

Hoddy and Harrison opened the bowling and kept the run-rate down with about 30 coming off 10 overs with the fall of 2 wickets to Harrison. This had already raised the required run-rate to nearly 7 per over. However 2 more wickets, to Hoddy, brought Strykers two best batsmen to the crease and  both went for the runs making the most of some loose bowling and scruffy fielding. Both Forster and George are struggling to get a rhythm to their bowling and with many of our best bowlers being unavailable it was a struggle to eke out the overs. However Forster had taken the vital wicket of Jyothi (81) and the match was evenly balanced. Play was again delayed when Pete Blackburn attempting to catch a hard hit ball at mid-off lost it  in the low sun and headed the ball over the boundary. Pete was sent off to hospital for stiches and managed to get back at the end of the match. Hoddy took over as captain and brought on Pickering who performed admirably taking the last 2 wickets. Strykers fell 12 runs short of victory with still 5 overs to go. A seesaw match which was played in good spirit and saw Nomads gain another victory.
