Nomads back to Winning Ways at Sutton on the Hill
Nomads showed their enthusiasm with a big turn-out at nets on Thursday in
anticipation of a tough match against old rivals Sutton. With 16 to choose from,
a comparatively young team was selected, whose average age, for a change, was
probably less than the opposition’s. There were also a handful of spectators and
a Nomad’s umpire in the shape of Heslington.
Rolfe won the toss, as usual, and elected to bowl to keep the drawing option
available, as this was a declaration match. Hutton made a good start when he
claimed a wicket off his second ball thanks to an excellent catch by Westwood. Hutton and Lloyd then continued their
good work of last week and Sutton struggled to score, Hutton having 5 maidens
out of his first 6 overs, and it was only after 20 overs when they got to a
run-rate of over 2 per over. It needed Martindale to come in to get the score
ticking over although even he was comparatively quiet. Cartwright, having bowled
3 overs for 6 runs and taken a wicket was unlucky to be taken off. Hoddy managed
to get the wicket of Martindale thanks to a good catch by Brannigan. An attempt at a second run to George met
with the fate it deserved. Most of the bowlers took wickets and all the catches
were held which enabled Nomads to claim all 10 of Sutton’s wickets for 130.
Nomads opened with new man, Ian Terry and Chris Jones. Terry played a casual
shot off a run scoring ball and guided the ball into the hands of slip. Ashford
was keeping his usual tight rein on one end so most of the runs came off
Griffith at the other end. Nik George was the next out under bizarre
circumstances. A defensive block against
Ashford saw Nik bend down to pick the ball up to throw back to the
bowler. However Nik realised the ball was still moving towards the stumps and he
brushed it away with his hand. A throttled appeal gave the umpire no choice but
to give him out “handled ball”, a rare form of dismissal in any grade of
cricket. Westwood came in and struck a vigorous 35, possibly trying to impress
someone, which appeared to make a victory assured as Jones was taking on the
Stanley role of staying there. However the quick dismissals of Fearon, Brannigan
and Hutton raised concern in the Nomads camp. This could have become major when
Cartwright gave a fairly simple c&b chance to Trevitt who could not cling on.
This was the last scare and a couple of fours from Cartwright gave the Nomads a
well-deserved victory.
Probably Nomads best bowling session of the season set up the winning chance.
Jones anchored the innings and on most other days would have gained the MVP
vote. However Westwood’s overall contribution of a quick 35 at the vital time, 3
wickets and 2 good catches gave him the edge.
