After discovering on the morning of the match that the opposition, Greenflies, could not raise a team, the Nomads were expecting a game amongst themselves to make use of the pitch booked at Kings Bromley. However, a mail out to all our contacts unexpectedly raised a response from Aston Unity who had also been let down. Nomads happily travelled down to the Aston Unity ground and won the toss, electing to bat on yet another scorching day. Gardner faced only 9 balls before being bowled before his opening partner, George, had faced a ball. Then on his first ball George chipped a catch into the covers for a golden duck to make the score 2-2. Moss and Adam Hughes calmed things down and the score reached 83 before the wicket of Hughes fell. Brannigan started slowly but on seeing Moss dismissed by a good catch on the boundary, having reached his century, attacked the bowling. The final 5 overs saw 3 wickets fall when Hutton, Rolfe and Cartwright played their shots. Heslington remained not out with a quickfire 16.
Another good score by Nomads after a shaky start. The captain had hoped for 250 in this season of high scores but was happy with the total achieved. After a double course of teas, as both sides had already prepared one, Nomads rolled out onto the field. Taylor and Hutton, as usual, bowled really well taking 3 wickets between them in the first 8 overs; the highlight being a superb diving catch by Rolfe off Hutton. With our total already looking out of reach for the opposition, Hutton rotated the bowlers, keeping Moss in reserve after his long bat. Cartwright and Heslington both took a wicket and Adam Hughes took the final wicket in the 33rd over to give Nomads a very comfortable victory.
Although our victory was quite conclusive, the opposition did elect to give 9 of their players a bowl, taking some of the pressure off our batsmen; another couple of quick wickets at the start of our innings would have put us under pressure. However thanks to the batting of, in particular, Hughes, Moss and Brannigan, and another good all round bowling performance Nomads notched up a much needed victory.
Many thanks to the opposition for accommodating us at the last minute and for the good spirit in which they played the match.
