Ashby Hastings C.C. v Lichfield Nomads C.C.

Nomads lose for the first time at Ashby

Playing for the 1st time at Ashby, Nomads elected to bat opening with Gardner and Stanley. Ashby were a very young side with a couple of older players, the older of whom was probably younger than the youngest Nomad playing. Captain Rolfe had agreed on retire at 50 but unfortunately had not made it clear whether players could come back in again. Facing tight accurate bowling Stanley and Gardner were both bowled fairly cheaply and Brannigan was a little unlucky to be caught at mid-on, not quite timing the shot. However Moss and Loxley came in to steady the ship with Loxley in particular playing some good shots. Loxley fell 12 short of his 50 but then Cogzell and Basi, replacing Moss, came in and made good contributions. However the best innings was Dan Lee who scored a rapid fire 45.
A good recovery from Nomads saw them post a decent score which would have been a match winner a few years ago but now scores of 200 plus are required.
The opener Spencer showed his first team status knocking up a rapid fire 50 in not many balls. Moss looked a bit out of sorts and came off after 2 overs replaced by Cogzell. The latter bowled well claiming 3 wickets and Lee at the other end was his usual efficient self. Jordon came on and bowled steadily claiming 2 wickets and should have had 3, the umpire not giving a catch behind that everyone else on the field saw and heard. The batsman did not walk but allowances should be made for his age, and to be fair a catch Hoddy took off Jordan was probably grounded. Unfortunately Hoddy, in taking this catch slipped and strained a muscle. He bowled, but off a 2 pace run, and still managed to take a wicket. Now at this stage, all the batsmen were out or retired, but the opener came back in, after 4 pints, and saw Ashby over the finishing line.
An enjoyable match, full of incident, saw Dan Lee win MVP, being rewarded with a team rendition of the Dan Lee song (sung to the tune of Jolene). Like many Nomads games the result was decided by one or two opposition League players.
