Woore C.C. v Lichfield Nomads C.C.

The rain in Staffs falls mainly in the South

Given the near Biblical amount of rain that had fallen across South Staffordshire and the West Midlands in the first half of May, the fixture list aligned in conjunction with the weather Gods to send the Nomads north west up the A51 to visit Woore for the first time in many years.
Remarkably a complete game was played on a firm pitch, although the undulating outfield was somewhat boggy in places. Injuries and lack of availability had affected the selection process, but ultimately the eleven who took the field did the club proud.
Having won the toss and elected to bat, Woore were pegged back to 12-2 owing to solid opening spells by Mahmood and Cogzell. This, however, led to the arrival of Scott who proceeded to hit a rapid and impressive 52. With the game poised at 85-4 in the 17th over, Hughes took his wicket at a vital time. Fearon and Cartwright did their part and, aided by impressive fielding, the latter wiped up the tail to take a career best 4-14 off 8 overs with Woore's innings closing at 121 all out in 32 overs.
After looking impressive in the nets, Ghosal opened with Gardner and carried on where he’d left off a few days earlier, staying at the crease for almost the entire Nomads innings while top scoring with 31, his highest score for the Nomads. Some erratic bowling early on meant that extras contributed their share as the Nomads moved purposefully towards their target at about four runs an over. Two quick wickets after the drinks break threatened to put some pressure on the remaining chase, but ultimately with contributions from Fearon, Loxley and Cogzell. the target of 122 was reached one ball short of the 30th over. Cartwright’s bowling earned him the MVP award.
This was a very good win for the Nomads, where everyone contributed in one way or another and the team ethos was at the forefront. [Disclaimer: Any offence caused by this article is unintentional, any praise is well deserved]
