D2 C.C. v Lichfield Nomads C.C.

Nomads Fight Back to Claim Victory

A hot summer's day saw Nomads travel to Lichfield to play longstanding opponents D2.
A shortage of players on their behalf had Stanley and Jordan playing for the opposition. Nomads batted first with openers Rana Ghosal and Pete Gardner. Progress was steady with a decent start of 35 off 8 overs for the loss of no wickets. However a change in bowlers saw Nomads begin to struggle and only 19 runs were added in the next 10 overs with the loss of 3 wickets. There were some rash shots by the middle order when a steady accumulation of runs was the order of the day. After 21 overs, 7 wickets had fallen and the score was a mere 68. Dave Rolfe and Dan Lee were in and stayed, slowly accumulating runs as the circumstances dictated. After Lee departed “Daz” Cartwright and then “God” Hoddy stayed with Rolfe for 13 overs enabling him to score valuable runs. Hoddy was finally bowled in the 38th over.
Nomads did not bat well, even though D2 used 9 bowlers, and we did well , thanks to a captain's innings, to reach 115 which at least gave us something to defend if we could bowl well.
Aneek Mahmood and Dan Lee both bowled really well in an 8 over opening spell which produced 2 wickets at the cost of only 14 runs. Jim Cogzell replaced Mahmood and bowled his best spell so far for Nomads claiming his first 5 for at the cost of only 15 runs. Then Hoddy and Cartwright kept things tight with Cartwright claiming the wicket, with a slow full toss, of the dangerous McCarthy, who had the stand out innings of the day scoring 43 mainly with one handed sweep shots. Mahmood was brought back and claimed the final wicket to give Nomads a memorable victory by 25 runs.
Jim Cogzell deserved to win MVP with 5 wickets but other excellent performances were by captain Dave Rolfe who dragged Nomads to a respectable score and Dan Lee who only conceded 7 runs in 8 overs and was unlucky not to get a 2nd wicket when the ball hit the top of the bail but did not dislodge it. However, this game again showed the spirit of the Nomads as a team fighting back from a seemingly lost position to gain the 3rd victory of the season.
