Lichfield Nomads C.C. v Walsall Health C.C.

In Sickness and in Health

For the second time this season, the Nomads came up short against Walsall Health, although the performance was far better than back in early June. Having won the toss and electing to bat, Nomads were determined not to throw away early wickets; as a result Gardner and Rolfe built a steady opening partnership of 71 in 22 overs. At this stage the pitch had plenty in it for the bowlers with several deliveries rising quite sharply. After reaching 25-0 after 10, the accelerator had already been put in gear before Rolfy went for 26.
The run rate really started picking up with the arrival of the in-form Mahmood, although he was unfortunately involved in a run out that left Gards just three short of what would have been a well deserved 50. Aneek went on to make 64, ably assisted by cameos from the lower middle order. Indeed the final 10 overs brought 91 runs, leading to a decent looking total of 218-8.
In reply Walsall Health lost Armstrong cheaply, but this brought Dunn to the crease and together with Preece they put together a remarkable second wicket stand of 205 to ensure victory. Three quick wickets fell near the end, but the Elf won by 6 wickets with 7 overs remaining.
Without wishing to rely on ifs and buts, there were a couple of chances that went begging and the rub of the green didn't seem to be on our side. The track had largely become lifeless by the time we came to bowl on it, but sometimes you need to make your own luck and that wasn't the case.
Overall it was disappointing to lose again to Walsall Health, but the game was played in a splendid spirit and there’s always next season.
