Walmley C.C. v Lichfield Nomads C.C.

Nomads Clinch Rain-delayed Victory in the Dark

After Sutton-on-the-Hill cried off and 2 other fixtures fell through, we gladly accepted the offer of a game against a Walmley development side. Walmley elected to bat and, as usual, Dan Lee applied the pressure with his usual couple of wickets for a few runs. Ian Hughes bowled at the other end and claimed the important wicket of the opposition captain caught by Jim Cogzell. Having 8 bowlers available, captain Dave Rolfe brought Hughes off after 4 replacing him with Aneek Mahmood and replaced Dan Lee by Jim Cogzell. Neither Jim nor Aneek were at their absolute best and the opposition built a partnership. However Daz Cartwright and John Hoddy came on and slowed the run-rate by slowing the pace of the bowling. From looking like reaching 200, Walmley were now struggling to make 150. Luke Turnbull came on and took the important wicket of Chadha with his first ball and Dan Moss polished the tail off.
The tea interval was extended as light rain fell, but we eventually re-started with Pete Gardner and Rana Ghosal opening the batting . The rain had slowed the outfield which made scoring more difficult but the openers kept up with the required rate and put on 92 in a first wicket stand with Ghosal extending his PB by a few runs but unfortunately not managing his maiden 50. Luke Turnbull pushedthe scoring to give a safety margin and the Aneek Mahmood joined Pete Gardner to comfortably attain the required total. A timely finish as the gloom was descending, however Gardner had already clocked up another 50.
A warm welcome at Walmley saw a well-contested match, but everyone contributed to give the Nomads another victory. Roll on the Captain’s curry
